Exploding Cinema
I showed the Supermarket film at Exploding Cinema last night, a night where anyone can put on any film, but they have to field questions about it after.
There was a really nice atmosphere there, projections all over the walls, everyone very friendly and laid back. There was some beautiful music by Poppy Mallow and a great performance by Angel Daden, featuring a hula hoop.

I'd like to use a similar style in my film to this GO! team one for Lady Flash. And this CSS one Let's Make Love and Listen to Death from Above.

Stephen Irwin's The Black Dog's Progress. This Animate Project commissioned animation is very simple in it's a message- a poor dog suffering, but it has different scenes present on the screen at one moment, like Nandita Jain has with her film (Labyrinth)

Ok, so this all looks a bit too green I think- but at least it looks like it's all going on in the same place.
I need to get the music done, finish martin walking, figure out how to make the background look better....

Exploding Cinema
I have had an email from Exploding Cinema, a group who puts on independently -made films in London.
http://www.explodingcinema.org/
They started in 1991. Disillusioned by the fact you were either in the commercial film industry, or constantly applying for funding from the arts council, they set up Exploding Cinema as a non-profit platform for films to be seen. Absolutely anyone can a show a film and they will show any film. Even if it is bad in many ways, so the audience must be active and critical.
Because it does not rely on funding it must rely completely on ticket sales at each show. This also means that it an only continue if people want to see what is on offer.
They need new members- I would really like to join the group. I can help them put on nights and I can propose projects that they can get involved with.
This Saturday there is a free show from local young artists of VHS tape work in an old Blockbusters in Catford that was looted in the riots.
I think this interesting as another film screening programme in London, Future Shorts, is showing "la Haine' (for free) at a Housing estate in Totenham, where the 2011 London riots first erupted. The show will be free, and employ people from the estate to help set it up. Also, a real life cow will be present.
I think it is really important to engage with the issues around cuts in public spending and the fact that the government haven't really acknowledged that as a major factor in the build up to the riots.

Freakaholics Anonymous
With my boyfreind I have been putting together a blog of silly 80's music videos of Italo Disco, Electro and Funk tunes, into a blog...

We decided to put on a night, to share these funny videos with others. However, we also made a facebook page here people can upload their own favourite freaky videos, to make the whole thing more participatory.

Tonight is the night of the show... We have already checked that the projector and sound files work- but I hope it goes well!

Making the video look consistent
I've just asked my tutor about making the ilm look consistent- making all the colours and the style look the same all the way through, to make it look more professional etc.
Apparently this is called Grading. Similar to how use use the curves of colour in photoshop or something. I need a programme, magic bullet looks, which is a plug in for final Cut Pro or After Effects.

Kath's Breakdown + Martin's adventure
Maybe it's better to put both stories together- show martin's adventure into apple farms and transportation and Kath's over choice-breakdown and rise to s grocery priestess.

Greggs Pasty Debacle
So one Food related item in the news right now is the rise in VAT tax to hot take away pasties and sausage rolls. It's being interpreted as an attack on normal people who are already finding their belts tightened.
I would like to include something more topical into my project but I think it's a bit late now there's only 1 month left.

Martin and the Supermarket Animatic 2
So here's the 2nd Animatic. I think the part with the video game is a bit sudden, and it's strange how we go from there to the apple farm. I think I need to build up the perculiarness of the supermarket from martin's perspective a bit more slowly.
I also think Kath needs to keep talking through the apple aisle bit and talk to martin more... Maybe if we zoom into martin's face after scene 2, before the apple aisle scene.
Also South American music for the farm bits isn't really appropriate.
I need to find a way to make the farm scene look exciting and Brandi Strickland-y

To do list-
Sketch slidey doors opening and closing
Traces more supermarket scenes. Trace up and over down and around scene changes.
Martin and the supermarket Scene Changes etc.
Scene 1-
Intro- Supermarkets pop up trolleys wiggle about
Scene change
Crowds fill the screen, then slidey doors slide open to reveal the supermarket.
Scene 2
Kath and Martin wander the aisle. Kath needs to buy some things. Supermarket products bob about. Maybe the floor and shelves move like an escalator. Has to look really good like nandita Jain's film.
Then close up to Martin's cute blinking face.
Scene Change- We flip up, down or around to see the other end of the supermarket aisle.
Scene 3
Apples zoom towards martin. all ker-razy. Maybe Kath walks toward them.
Scene Change (Just boring cut)
Scene 4 Martin blinks more curiously
Scene 5
Beam rider apples as kath talks about what apples she needs.
Scene Change
Airplane hovers for a bit. Beam rider morphs maybe airplane hovers in a nice way that it moves about in the sky but its a cut out and there's scribbling inside the cut out.
Background of beamrider morphs into the apple farm.
Scene 6
then it's the packing apple factory
Back to the airplane soaring into the sky.
Scene Change.
Kath pops into view "c'mone poppet we can go now"
Scene 7. Kath in supermarket.
Scene change (boring cut)
Scene 8
Leaving supermarket freaking out behind them "maybe we could make a crumble at the weekend, martin"

Transition Initiative
Maybe I could try to get the transition Initiative or some other food-lobbying group on board.
New Animatic
Intro- Supermarket pops up
Scene 1- Kath and martin walk through supermaket. Nandita Jain style. Items bobbing about.
Scene 2- View of supermarket from Martin's persective (maybe apple aisle)
Scene 3- Apple video game
Scene 4- Martin goes into a dream world to discover the apple farming industry of South africa. The airplane from the video game shoots off with him and takes him to the farm. Soft touch images of farm etc. We see the worker and the factory packaging, transport etc etc. Back to the supermarket where everyone is soul train dancing.
Scene 5 Kath says "come on poppet" and they leave the supermaket.

Children's Animation Informing about where food comes from.
I've had a long think about what I want 'the purpose' of the animation to be. I've decided I don't really want to make a Shana Moulton-style caberet about a supermarket breakdown because I think it's a bit navel-gazing and I'd like to make something that connects with real life more.
I'd like to emulate something like sesame street or the horrible histories tv series. I really like these tv shows. Also, I think that if I made an informative film for adults it would be more overtly political. i.e, don't buy from supermarket x, buy organic, local etc etc. which I don't really feel qualified to do. However, if it's aimed at children the incentive to see it seems more innocently factual. However, like sesame street it will have an underlying liberal-socialist ideology.

90's girl groups

Sa-Deuce, Don't waste my time

I don't want to sound like Mary Whitehouse, but look at how these girls can still "Sa-deuce" while wearing baggy jeans and jumpers... look at rihana's videos these days and your lucky if she's wearing more than all-over silver body paint.

Bits from showreel
Here'a a few bits and bobs from my showreel... things i thought I might be able to incorporate into the film. One is a film about Harriet Tubman, A member of the Underground Railroad who helped over 70's slaves escape to freedom. She suffered a head injury as a teenager which led to temporal lobe epilepsy- she had a strong religious conviction and had potent visions and dreams.

Global Food Issues
Quite a big problem is that I don't really know anything about economics... Maybe I could find a nice economics phd student to collaborate with... but I guess it's all going to come down to state funding for the small farmer...
Also, it's a bit of a ridiculously wide topic- I suppose i'd have to concentrate on certain countries- countries which produce food for britain.
It would be good to incorporate an informative angle in the film.

Global Food Shortage

Something like this article could form the basis of a section about world food issues. The information could perhaps come in during the new age trance section.

Soft Touch Trailer
Music Videos
I've been making some kind of music videos- using footage from cheesey 80's films... I think this on has quite a feminist message- representations of women being either 'hey I'm sexy!" or "Work is really boring"
I think this could be incorporated into the video about the supermarket- something about women having to juggle many expectations of themselves? But I feel like I'd need to back that up with some research- and who's to say men don't suffer breakdowns in supermarkets too? I'm sure I know some who do...
Maybe the supermarket could story could play out- everyone dancing around in the supermarket having a great time (soul train etc)- Kath, being a supermarket goddess willing the products to her grip...apple aisle- video game- all goes wrong she cant cope. farmers come out of the floor..., new age dream land escape....
Or a possible non pretentious option- a jaunty film about the state of world food economics.... not sure I can really fit that in too easily... Could all get a bit Adam Curtis with the found-footage angle.
However, I do kind of feel like some bizarre kenneth anger- soul train supermarket psychedelic breakdown is a bit pointless and pretentious... but maybe I need to think outside the box of everything having a 'point'.....

Supermarket Workers
Maybe there could be some dialogue with supermarket workers... Make they could say stuff like...
"I'm sorry we're closing the shop now... I really wanna go home"
or
"We don't have any funsize mars bars left I'm afraid."
"What?!?!? That's pathetic!"
"To be honest I don't think you should should let mars bars rule your life."
or maybe just not understanding what the customer is saying and getting it wrong...

SoulTrainSupermarket/Double Vision
With After Effects I chucked a dancer off Soul train onto the supermarket. It's quite messy but hopefully these after effects skills will grow with time. It's also quite low quality (downlaoded off youtube.) Maybe I'll have to but a soul train dvd.
The second it features some people coming up from the floor. It's kinda inspired by the "double vision' idea of any second class citizen having to view the world through the dominant ideology and their own perspective at the same time. E.g. if you're an ethnic minority in Britain you'll absorb all the white british culture but you'll also have another culture to view it from.
...Anyway so the idea is kind of that the people who are exploited in the production of food sort of appear under the floor of the supermarket while the shopper dances along. But I don't know if Aldi (where i took the photos) are particularly unethical in their food production. It's just that I get to shop there and do things like a Masters in Communication Design but I think the people who got the food there might not.
Or it could be a double vision for the woman shopping, say, a housewife shopping for the family could have different views competing as she makes her purchase choices.
Ceephax Acid Crew-Communter
So I think I'd like to do a similar thing to this video- it's about a commuter who has to find his missing dog, whilst dealing with pressures of the office, on his way to work.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHFL8WY-_cI&feature=BFa&list=PL6CC464097460DA5E&lf=plpp_video

Animatic Number 7
I showed this film at college today. I'm going to try to build up the tension with the over-choice more slowly. Maybe think about a performance. But I'd like to collaborate with people more...who go shopping and feel overwhelmed with too much choice....
I'd also like to try placing people dancing (maybe from old Soul Train videos or some-such) over the supermarket. Maybe with some Kenneth anger style ceremonial robed orchestrators too.
Also try some apples morphing into Jeff, money, the kids and a plane from south africa.
I also want to create more movement in the background, to show the journey through the supermarket, maybe try some nice different camera angles, shoppers stepping over the 'camera'.
Perhaps mixing scenens of the supermarket with a barren silicon valley album cover grid structure.
