Transition Initiative

Maybe I could try to get the transition Initiative or some other food-lobbying group on board.

New Animatic

Intro- Supermarket pops up

Scene 1- Kath and martin walk through supermaket. Nandita Jain style. Items bobbing about.

Scene 2- View of supermarket from Martin's persective (maybe apple aisle)

Scene 3- Apple video game

Scene 4- Martin goes into a dream world to discover the apple farming industry of South africa. The airplane from the video game shoots off with him and takes him to the farm. Soft touch images of farm etc. We see the worker and the factory packaging, transport etc etc. Back to the supermarket where everyone is soul train dancing.

Scene 5 Kath says "come on poppet" and they leave the supermaket.

Children's Animation Informing about where food comes from.

I've had a long think about what I want 'the purpose' of the animation to be. I've decided I don't really want to make a Shana Moulton-style caberet about a supermarket breakdown because I think it's a bit navel-gazing and I'd like to make something that connects with real life more.

I'd like to emulate something like sesame street or the horrible histories tv series. I really like these tv shows. Also, I think that if I made an informative film for adults it would be more overtly political. i.e, don't buy from supermarket x, buy organic, local etc etc. which I don't really feel qualified to do. However, if it's aimed at children the incentive to see it seems more innocently factual. However, like sesame street it will have an underlying liberal-socialist ideology.

Bits from showreel

Here'a a few bits and bobs from my showreel... things i thought I might be able to incorporate into the film. One is a film about Harriet Tubman, A member of the Underground Railroad who helped over 70's slaves escape to freedom. She suffered a head injury as a teenager which led to temporal lobe epilepsy- she had a strong religious conviction and had potent visions and dreams.

Global Food Issues

Quite a big problem is that I don't really know anything about economics... Maybe I could find a nice economics phd student to collaborate with... but I guess it's all going to come down to state funding for the small farmer...

Also, it's a bit of a ridiculously wide topic- I suppose i'd have to concentrate on certain countries- countries which produce food for britain.

It would be good to incorporate an informative angle in the film.

Global Food Shortage

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-13597657

Something like this article could form the basis of a section about world food issues. The information could perhaps come in  during the new age trance section.

Soft Touch Trailer

This part could form the basis of the "new age trance" bit at the end of the scene in the supermarket...

Music Videos

I've been making some kind of music videos- using footage from cheesey 80's films... I think this on has quite a feminist message- representations of women being either 'hey I'm sexy!" or "Work is really boring"

I think this could be incorporated into the video about the supermarket- something about women having to juggle many expectations of themselves? But I feel like I'd need to back that up with some research- and who's to say men don't suffer breakdowns in supermarkets too? I'm sure I know some who do...

Maybe the supermarket could story could play out- everyone dancing around in the supermarket having a great time (soul train etc)- Kath, being a supermarket goddess willing the products to her grip...apple aisle- video game- all goes wrong she cant cope. farmers come out of the floor..., new age dream land escape....

Or a possible non pretentious option- a  jaunty film about the state of world food economics.... not sure I can really fit that in too easily... Could all get a bit Adam Curtis with the found-footage angle.

However, I do kind of feel like some bizarre kenneth anger- soul train supermarket psychedelic breakdown is a bit pointless and pretentious... but maybe I need to think outside the box of everything having a 'point'.....

Soft Touch

SoulTrainSupermarkets

Supermarket Workers

Maybe there could be some dialogue with supermarket workers... Make they could say stuff like...

"I'm sorry we're closing the shop now... I really wanna go home"

or

"We don't have any funsize mars bars left I'm afraid."
"What?!?!? That's pathetic!"
"To be honest I don't think you should should let mars bars rule your life."

or maybe just not understanding what the customer is saying and getting it wrong...

Beam rider video game

Maybe I could have a scene where the apples tumble towards kath like an 80's video game and flash things like JEFF HATES THESE APPLES LOOSE 100 POINTS

SoulTrainSupermarket/Double Vision

With After Effects I chucked a dancer off Soul train onto the supermarket. It's quite messy but hopefully these after effects skills will grow with time. It's also quite low quality (downlaoded off youtube.) Maybe I'll have to but a soul train dvd.

The second it features some people coming up from the floor. It's kinda inspired by the "double vision' idea of any second class citizen having to view the world through the dominant ideology and their own perspective at the same time. E.g. if you're an ethnic minority in Britain you'll absorb all the white british culture but you'll also have another culture to view it from.

...Anyway so the idea is kind of that the people who are exploited in the production of food sort of appear under the floor of the supermarket while the shopper dances along. But I don't know if Aldi (where i took the photos) are particularly unethical in their food production. It's just that I get to shop there and do things like a Masters in Communication Design but I think the people who got the food there might not.

Or it could be a double vision for the woman shopping, say, a housewife shopping for the family could have different views competing as she makes her purchase choices.

Ceephax Acid Crew-Communter

So I think I'd like to do a similar thing to this video- it's about a commuter who has to find his missing dog, whilst dealing with pressures of the office, on his way to work.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHFL8WY-_cI&feature=BFa&list=PL6CC464097460DA5E&lf=plpp_video

Animatic Number 7

I showed this film at college today. I'm going to try to build up the tension with the over-choice more slowly. Maybe think about a performance. But I'd like to collaborate with people more...who go shopping and feel overwhelmed with too much choice....

I'd also like to try placing people dancing (maybe from old Soul Train videos or some-such) over the supermarket. Maybe with some Kenneth anger style ceremonial robed orchestrators too.

Also try some apples morphing into Jeff, money, the kids and a plane from south africa.

I also want to create more movement in the background, to show the journey through the supermarket, maybe try some nice different camera angles, shoppers stepping over the 'camera'.

Perhaps mixing scenens of the supermarket with a barren silicon valley album cover grid structure.

Animatic Draft 3

I think I might try to make some sketches of supermarkets, to try to integrate the grid with the supermarket interior look. Also try to add some more collages and make Kath more detailed in design and animation.

Alice Kirby

This is some work from my friend Alice Kirby, I think it's great! A bit like Brandi Strickland....

Animatic Number 2

I really want the final video to look really good, so I might cut it when Kath remembers her Grandma, It's quality over quantity.

Animatic- Supermarket Breakdown

Picking Apples with Grandma

Similar Humour- Martin and the Parsnips

This is a short Cartoon strip about a TEFL teacher who over reacts when his dinner is ruined. I'd like to use similar humour in my film.

South African Apples

Kath's Overchoice Breakdown

Apple Indecision

Supermarket Alienation 2

Rough Storyboard

1. Woman In Supermarket... "Ok, I'll be making a chilli thursday. Best get some chopped tomatoes, we're out of toilet paper too...."

2. She chooses some apples. "Ok now, there's Braeburns, Cox's, Pink Ladies, Funsize, Granny Smith... Now what do I need from apples today?"

3. All the different apple pros and cons are weighed up. Some apples talk with South African Accents. They're friendly.

4. How can she choose which apples to buy? Should she buy them according to price? health? What her partner likes? What's eco-friendly?

She has a nervous breakdown.

5. She remembers picking apples with her Grandma... Her Grandma is a bit nuts.

6. They bake a crumble together.

7. She thinks of growing her own apples.

8. She has a picnic with her neighbours. Some are a bit bitchy
